The pair have been involved in one of the most famous family feuds in showbusiness since 2001, when Voight told Access Hollywood that Jolie had "serious mental problems" and pleaded with her to seek help.
Relations had already become strained after Jolie learned Voight had had an affair behind her mother's back.
Now Voight has disclosed that the pair met face-to-face in February with the support of his daughter's husband Brad Pitt, with whom she has six children, and have been in contact ever since.
“We’re in touch, but not regularly,” Voight told Us Weekly magazine. “We love each other and that’s the most important thing.”
A family friend told the magazine: "Angie made the initial contact,” said the friend. “Brad Pitt has been supportive – a key factor in her reaching out.”
Jolie and Pitt have three adopted children and three children of their own.
Voight was one of the biggest stars of the 1970s following his appearance in the 1969 Oscar-winning Midnight Cowboy in which he played the hustler Joe Buck.

Actress Nicole Kidman recently walked the red carpet with her husband Keith Urban wearing a dress that seemingly made her appear bustier than usual. The fuchsia embroidered L'Wren Scott dress the actress donned at the Country Music Awards has received varied takes in the fashion world.
America's InStyle magazine appreciated the ‘Australia’ star, choosing her for fashion pick of the day prize, reports Adelaide Now. Also InStyle quoted: "Nicole Kidman accentuated her famous red hair with a vibrant pink gown and colour-clashing jewellery.” However, the Daily Mail in London suggested the beauty honed the appearance with "extra help" from the lingerie department.
"Slender Nicole looked in danger of spilling out of her gorgeous magenta dress which hugged her figure, and showcased her stunning rarely seen curves. "Clearly the actress who is well known for her slim figure had enlisted some extra help in the lingerie department."
But back in New Jersey, newspaper the Star-Ledger, suggested it was a faux pas. It wrote: "Just because you're now living in Nashville doesn't mean you have to shop there. What consignment shop did Nicole Kidman dig this sparkly hot pink retreat out of?

Everyone wants Blake Lively's hair. The New York Times is saying it's the new Rachel or Farrah. The NYT then spends a whole article discussing the Gossip Girl star's hair and includes all kinds of weird quotes like, "It's aspirational hair. don't just want the hair, they want the life." Or "the look only works for tall, slim women" and "kind of transcends" age. It's a lot of analysis for a hairstyle, and we gotta say, most of the time we see Blake out she's actually rocking the unbrushed, messy look . Even when it's all nice with a fresh blowout, it doesn't look that iconic. Not even close to Rachel status.
Move over Farrah and Rachel--there's a new haircut in town that has Manhattan women sauntering to the salon: The Blake Lively. According to the New York Times' recent survey, Lively's long, blond, messy locks are the most requested by ladies waiting in the chair. Nuri Yurt of Toka Salon on Madison Avenue says the look only works on tall, skinny women, but that doesn't seem to dissuade any cult-cut followers."I didn't really realize the extent of it," Ms. Lively said of her hair's popularity, though she had an inkling: fashion forerunners like Vogue staffers routinely approach her at events and fixate on her hair, she said. "That's always kind of odd, but unbelievably flattering," she said.
